Red Star Belgrade 0 Arsenal 1: Giroud´s special winner lights up drab encounter

Arsenal limped past Red Star Belgrade 1-0 as Olivier Giroud s stunning goal lit up an otherwise entirely forgettable Europa League encounter.

After sparkling inter-play between Jack Wilshere and Theo Walcott, Giroud executed an overhead kick into the top corner five minutes from time to lift returning pressure from Arsene Wenger.

The weekend s defeat to Watford, after which the Hornets captain Troy Deeney claimed the Gunners lacked Cojones , reopened some Arsenal fans frustrations with Wenger and the players and this performance did little to help.

Wenger reverted to the patchwork approach he has taken to European team selections this season, Mathieu Debuchy playing for the first time in nearly a year, while Mohamed Elneny featured alongside the Frenchman in a …

Swansea City 1 Liverpool 2: Milner penalty piles pressure on Guidolin

James Milner netted a late penalty as Liverpool came from behind to beat Swansea City 2-1 and pose further questions over Francesco Guidolin s future at the Liberty Stadium.

Leroy Fer s fourth Premier League goal of the season put the Swans, whose last home win came against Liverpool in May, ahead in the eighth minute.

Liverpool lost Adam Lallana to a groin injury during a first half in which they failed to register a shot on target, a far cry from the 5-1 win over Hull City last time out.

But Jurgen Klopp s side quickly addressed that in the second half, as Roberto Firmino headed them level.

And Guidolin, who has not tasted victory in the league since the opening-day win over Burnley, was left empty-handed again when shambolic …

Ronaldo a success at Juve, Pirlo can prosper as coach – Nuno Gomes

Cristiano Ronaldo has proved any doubters wrong following his move to Juventus despite the Italian club s failure to conquer Europe, according to Nuno Gomes.

Ronaldo opted to leave Real Madrid in 2018 after winning a fourth Champions League title in five years, exiting as the Spanish side s all-time leading scorer to continue his career in Serie A.

While the Portuguese has collected two league titles since the sensational switch, Juve have come up short in European competition. They fell at the quarter-final stage to Ajax in 2019, while this season suffered a shock last-16 exit at the hands of Lyon.

Missing out on reaching the revised knockout rounds in Portugal led to a swift change in coach, Maurizio Sarri sacked as Andrea Pirlo was surprisingly given th…

Wijnaldum frustrated as Netherlands miss out on Nations League title

Georginio Wijnaldum rued a missed opportunity to land another major trophy after Netherlands fell to defeat in the Nations League final.

The midfielder celebrated Champions League success with Liverpool at the start of June and was chasing a stunning double.

But a 1-0 defeat to Portugal in Porto on Sunday scuppered that hope, and the only consolation was that the future for the Oranje looks bright after years in the doldrums.

They failed to qualify for Euro 2016 and last year s World Cup but look to be developing into a force again, with Ronald Koeman in charge.

Wijnaldum said: I’m very disappointed of course. But I’m still proud we came back after so many difficult years. But that doesn’t make me less disappointed.

We should have created …

Evan Ndicka ‘in good spirits’ in hospital after collapsing during Roma match

Roma defender Evan Ndicka is recovering in hospital after collapsing on the pitch during Sunday’s Serie A clash with Udinese.

The game at the Bluenergy Stadium was abandoned after 72 minutes with the score at 1-1 after the 24-year-old Ivory Coast international went down off the ball.

Ndicka was carried off on a stretcher after undergoing treatment on the pitch, but Roma later confirmed that the former Auxerre and Eintracht Frankfurt player was “feeling better” and “in good spirits” after being taken to hospital for checks.

The squad went to visit Ndicka at the hospital.

Evan is feeling better and is in good spirits. He will remain in the hospital for further observations.

League Two Preview: Southern looking to inspire Shrewsbury promotion

After arriving on a temporary deal from Fleetwood Town, Keith Southern hopes his experience can help in Shrewsbury Town s promotion push.

Keith Southern is aiming to help propel Shrewsbury Town back to League One after arriving on loan from Fleetwood Town – starting against Stevenage on Saturday.

Shrewsbury were relegated from the third tier last season and are currently looking well-placed to make an immediate return, sitting in third.

Southern is keen to help that promotion push as he prepares for his debut against Stevenage.

The 33-year-old made 21 Premier League appearances for Blackpool during the 2010-11 season, before leaving the club for Huddersfield Town in June 2012, and he is confident that he has a lot to contribute.

He told the clu…

Sherwood: Richards is a winner

Aston Villa manager Tim Sherwood said the decision to sign Micah Richards was an easy one because the defender is a winner .

Richards penned a four-year deal at Villa Park following the expiry of his Manchester City contract.

The England international won the Premier League twice and the FA Cup in 2011 during his time in Manchester, but spent last season on loan at Fiorentina after falling down the pecking order at the Etihad Stadium.

Richards only made 10 appearances in Serie A, though, and Sherwood was all too happy to take a gamble on the 26-year-old as he looks to instill a winning mentality at last season s FA Cup finalists.

I m really pleased to get Micah on board and I m sure he will prove to be an excellent signing for the football club, Richard…

Woodcock predicts Podolski success

Former Arsenal and Cologne striker Tony Woodcock backed Lukas Podolski to make a big impact after his move to the Emirates was confirmed.

Cologne announced on Monday that Germany forward Podolski will join Arsenal from next season in a deal believed to be worth 11 million pounds.

Woodcock, who had two stints at Cologne and a spell at Arsenal in the 1980s, is confident Podolski has the ability and experience to prosper upon his arrival in London.

Lukas is a very, very good player and I am sure that he will be a success at Arsenal so the fans should be very excited at the prospect of him joining their club, Woodcock told Goal.com.

I am certain that he will do very well in the Premier League because of the timing. This is the perfect time for Lukas to be …

Klopp beats Flick to The Best FIFA Men´s Coach award

Jurgen Klopp has won The Best FIFA Men s Coach award for the second year running after Liverpool s breakthrough Premier League triumph.

Klopp oversaw the Reds title success in 2019-20, ending a 30-year wait for a top-flight championship.

FIFA recognition for 2020 follows his win in the same award 12 months earlier after Liverpool won the Champions League.

The Liverpool manager pipped Hansi Flick, the Bayern Munich coach, and Leeds United s Marcelo Bielsa on this occasion.

Flick came up short despite guiding Bayern to the treble, with glory in the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal and Champions League.

Remarkably, he was still assistant to Niko Kovac on July 20, 2019 when the period under consideration for the award began.
