Premier League Preview: Everton v West Brom

Roberto Martinez takes charge of Everton for the first time at Goodison Park when they play host to West Brom on Saturday.

The Spaniard saw his team take a well-earned point away to Norwich City in the opening game of the season, and were only denied by a superb header from Ricky van Wolfswinkel who levelled the game at 2-2.

Steve Clarke will have to revitalise his charges as they fell to a 1-0 defeat at home to Southampton on Saturday courtesy of a 90th-minute penalty from Rickie Lambert.

Everton lead the head-to-head meetings in the league between the two sides with 60 wins to West Brom s 54, but the sides took a win apiece in the Premier League last season.

West Brom have lost on their last two league visits to Goodison Park, but their last success at the grou…

Atletico finally fulfilling potential, says Diego

New signing Diego believes Atletico Madrid are finally fulfilling their potential having climbed to the top of La Liga on Sunday.

A 4-0 victory over Real Sociedad sent Atletico three points clear at the top of the league, with previous leaders Barcelona having lost at home to Valencia on Saturday.

And Diego who moved to the Spanish capital on a loan deal from Wolfsburg in January, having previously enjoyed a loan spell at the club in 2011-12 feels such success has been a long time coming.

It was about time this team grew and won, he said. When I first came here (2011), it was a very well organised team.

Now we’re more accustomed to playing at this level, to winning.

This is one of the strongest teams in Europe and I want to help the team keep winning.

Terry turns down Spartak Moscow move

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Spartak and wish them and their supporters well for the rest of the season.

They are an ambitious club and I have been very impressed with their professionalism.

But after assessing this move with my family, we ve decided this is not the right move for ourselves at this time.

Good luck Spartak.

Terry made in excess of 700 appearances for Chelsea, winning five Premier League titles, before ending a career-long association with the Stamford Bridge outfit at the end of the 2016-17 season.

He helped Villa to the Championship play-off final last season, where they were pipped to promotion by Fulham.

Liverpool 2 Burnley 1: Can´s the man in comeback win

Emre Can struck the winner as Liverpool beat Burnley 2-1 at Anfield to close the gap to third-placed Manchester City in the Premier League table ahead of their meeting next weekend.

With the rest of the top six in FA Cup action, Jurgen Klopp s side came from behind to beat Burnley and consolidate fourth place, while closing to within a point of City and Tottenham.

Liverpool did not have it all their own way in the first half, though, with Ashley Barnes opening the scoring for the visitors as they eyed a maiden away win this term and a first seasonal double over the Reds since 1930.

But Georginio Wijnaldum equalised in first-half stoppage time and Can s long-range stunner completed the turnaround just past the hour, clinching the points with Burnley s attempts at …

Four people have been arrested in Spain under suspicion of hanging an effigy of Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior off a bridge in January.

And Spanish police confirmed on Tuesday that four suspects had been apprehended.

No Rice decision as Bayern enter race for England midfielder

Bayern Munich have entered the race to sign Declan Rice from West Ham this summer, according to German journalist Florian Plettenberg. Apparently, head coach Thomas Tuchel, who reportedly wanted to sign Rice for Chelsea before getting sacked at the start of this season, is pushing to get his main target now at the Allianz Arena instead.

Hammers boss David Moyes recently hinted at a possible departure of the 24-year-old England international from the London Stadium at the end of the season, but the club are believed to be demanding well over £100 million to relinquish the services of the player whose contract has one more year to go, and one more if the clause at their disposal is triggered.

However, Plettenberg says Bayern might just be willing to meet those demands.

Begovic uncertain over future; SWFC sign Seyi Olofinjana

Stoke City goalkeeper Asmir Begovic has revealed he does not know what the future holds for him amid reports suggesting Premier League quartet Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City are targeting the highly-rated shot-stopper.

Begovic, 26, joined Stoke from Portsmouth for a fee of £3.25 million in 2010, having since established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the English Premier League.

The Bosnia and Herzegovina international, whose current contract at the Britannia Stadium expires in the summer of 2016, is expected to stay in Staffordshire until next summer despite rumours linking him with a January departure.

The Potters already have a long-term replacement for Begovic after signing Jack Butland from Birmingham City in a …

Keshi: Our flag is flying in Brazil

Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi was delighted to have secured qualification to Brazil 2014 with a 4-1 aggregate victory over Ethiopia.

Goals from Victor Moses and Victor Obinna sealed a 2-0 win in the second leg in Calabar on Saturday to send Nigeria through to their fifth FIFA World Cup finals.

Moses penalty in the 20th minute settled their nerves, but it was not until Obinna s late strike that the celebrations were able to begin.

Keshi admitted his side had not been at their fluent best but was proud they had enough to record the win and end Ethiopia s dream of a first appearance at a World Cup finals.

The first thing was to make sure we qualified, the 51-year-old said. Our flag is flying in Brazil, I will take it.

In today s game I don t mind that we played…

Don´t forget Wenger´s achievements – Conte

Antonio Conte has urged critics of Arsene Wenger to remember the Arsenal manager s achievements at the club following a difficult week for the Frenchman.

Arsenal suffered a 5-1 defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Wednesday and the Gunners have lost three of their last five games in all competitions, including a 3-1 reverse against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Speculation over Wenger s future at Arsenal has mounted in the wake of his side s poor form, but Conte gave the 67-year-old – whose side trail Premier League leaders Chelsea by 10 points his backing.

I have great respect for him as a manager and man, said Conte. He has done a great job for 20 years and is doing a great job in the present.

When you are the coach in the great team y…

Costa form is Conte´s greatest achievement – Wilson

Diego Costa s form for Chelsea this season is one of Antonio Conte s greatest achievements, according to former Arsenal goalkeeper Bob Wilson.

Speaking ahead of the London Football Awards, Wilson described Conte s impact at Stamford Bridge as extraordinary and picked out his man-management of Spain striker Costa as key to Chelsea s march to the top of the Premier League.

Costa has scored 16 goals in the Premier League this season, already eclipsing his total of 12 in Chelsea s previous campaign. The 28-year-old is on course to beat his best Chelsea tally of 20, scored when the Blues won the Premier League under Jose Mourinho s management in 2014-15.

Of the two most difficult positions in any team, the goalkeeper is crucial, said Wilson. You might not find it un…
