Scaloni hopes to ´convince´ Di Maria to reverse Argentina retirement call

Lionel Scaloni has not ruled out trying to convince Angel Di María to reverse his Argentina retirement decision after the 2024 Copa America.

The 36-year-old announced in November that the tournament in the United States would mark the last time he represents his country.

Di Maria earned his 144th cap for Argentina in Tuesday s 2-0 win over Canada as La Albiceleste reached a sixth Copa final in eight editions.

And having played in four of Argentina s five games en route to this latest final, starting three of those, Di Maria continues to show his importance to the world champions.

Ahead of what is scheduled to be Di Maria s final Argentina game on Sunday, against either Colombia or Uruguay, Scaloni told reporters: You know how I feel about Angel.

Inter terminates former €40m signing Joao Mario´s contract

Inter have agreed to terminate Portugal international midfielder Joao Mario s contract by mutual consent.

The 28-year-old joined Inter from Sporting for €40 million in 2016 after Portugal s Euros triumph but struggled to break into the first team, spending most of his time out on loan.

Joao Mario had a loan spell with West Ham United in 2018, before stints at Lokomotiv Moscow and Sporting.

Thanks so much Inter. Good luck for the future, Joao Mario posted in a brief message on Twitter.

Joao Mario was part of Sporting s 2020-21 Portuguese Primeira Liga title which ended their 19-year wait.

The Euro 2016 winner only managed 69 appearances for the Nerazzurri during his five years with the club and had one year remaining on his contract.

Low laughs off Ballack criticism

Germany head coach Joachim Low is smiling in the face of criticism from the team s former midfielder Michael Ballack over their performances at Euro 2016.

The world champions opened their Group C campaign with a 2-0 win over Ukraine, despite a less than sparkling showing.

They toiled for large parts of the subsequent 0-0 draw with Poland, with their opponents arguably the better side, but remain in a strong position to qualify ahead of Tuesday s final group fixture against Northern Ireland.

Despite that, Ballack – inspirational in Germany s run to the final of the competition in 2008 – claimed the current crop of players lacked personality and character.

Things repeat themselves so much, said Low.
