Pochettino looks to emulate Ferguson at Spurs

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino would love to replicate Manchester United icon Alex Ferguson by building around young English talent with Spurs.

Ferguson turned United into a force on the back of winning the 1992-93 Premier League – their first top-flight title in 26 years, which would be followed by 12 more under Ferguson.

The Argentinian has the likes of England stars Harry Kane and Dele Alli in top form this season, with Spurs second to Chelsea in the league table.

And Pochettino hopes the home-grown stars he has nurtured can become title-winning stars in north London.

There is big pressure to win when you are a big club, Pochettino said.

But for me the best example in football in many years was Manchester United with Sir Alex Ferguso…

CSKA Sofia demoted due to financial crisis

CSKA Sofia, Bulgaria s most decorated club, have been demoted to the third division due to their financial crisis, the Bulgarian Football Union (BFU) have confirmed.

CSKA, who have 31 league titles to their name, have dominated Bulgarian football over the years, however they have fallen on tougher times in recent campaigns.

They have not won a title since 2008 and have failed to win any silverware since lifting the domestic cup and supercup in 2011.

Financial irregularities at the capital club saw the BFU deny them a licence for the Bulgarian A Group, and the governing body have now confirmed their punishment.

When contacted by Perform the BFU said CSKA had no chance of starting the new campaign in the professional leagues, and have no right to a…

FA Cup second-round draw: Salford host Hartlepool, Walsall face tough away trip

Giant-killers Salford City will host Hartlepool United in the second round of this season s FA Cup.

The Northern Premier League side, who are part-owned by former Manchester United stars Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt, Gary Neville and Phil Neville, stunned Notts County in the first round and will now host another League One outfit in the form of Ronnie Moore s men.

Chesham United, who upset Bristol Rovers to reach this stage, will visit either Aldershot Town or Bradford City, while Northwich Victoria the lowest-ranked club left in the draw will travel to face Northampton Town should they defeat Boreham Wood.

League One leaders Walsall, meanwhile, will face a trip to either FC United of Manchester or Chesterfield, while 2008 winners Portsmouth host Accringt…

Ajax sack manager Maurice Steijn after poor start

Ajax have announced that manager Maurice Steijn has left the Eredivisie club with immediate effect.

Steijn’s departure comes in the wake of a 4-3 defeat at Utrecht that left the Dutch giants sitting one point off the bottom of the table with just one win from their first seven games.

Steijn signed a three-year contract with the club this summer after moving from Sparta Rotterdam, whom he led to a shock sixth-placed finish last season.

Ajax chief executive Jan van Halst said: “We have worked intensely and professionally together over the last few months.

Ajax and Maurice Steijn will part ways with immediate effect. The club management and Steijn have agreed that the coach will step down from his position.

Montella dismisses talk of Milan title challenge

Vincenzo Montella is keen to temper expectations at AC Milan this season despite many considering the Rossoneri as contenders to Juventus Serie A dominance after an influx of arrivals at San Siro.

Milan have invested heavily in the off-season, signing the likes of Leonardo Bonucci, Ricardo Rodriguez, Hakan Calhanohglu and Andre Silva, to spark hope of a first league title since 2011 – the last time a team other than Juve won the title.

But head coach Montella says it will take time for a new-look Rossoneri to become a winning force in the top flight.

I am not interested in why people say Milan are title contenders, he told a pre-match news conference ahead of their season opener against Crotone.

We signed many new players and we first of all need to b…

Prediction: New Zealand vs Peru

Verdict: Away win

Best Odds:

Bookmaker:

Oceania champions New Zealand will need to show serious improvement if they want to keep this tie alive ahead of the return leg in Peru, although their highest ever football crowd might be able to help. La Blanquirroja did well to secure a play-off berth after a strong finish to their qualifying campaign and they are now the favourites to reach Russia.

New Zealand

Even with Australia moving to the Asian Zone of World Cup qualifiers, New Zealand have only once made it to the tournament finals after their first appearance in 1982. All Whites did well to record three draws in the group stage at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, but they have been pretty disappointing of late. While failing to largely dominate eve…

Stoke City 1 Southampton 2: Pelle brace gives Koeman´s men victory

Graziano Pelle s brace helped Southampton move up to seventh in the Premier League table with a 2-1 win at Stoke City.

Pelle gave Southampton the lead after 11 minutes, flicking in a Steven Davis corner to score his first goal in 13 top-flight outings.

The Italy international striker hit his second before half-time, linking up with Dusan Tadic and capitalising on lax defending to place a low shot beyond Jack Butland, who appeared to misjudge the strike.

Stoke hit back shortly after the interval when Marko Arnautovic converted a cross from Ibrahim Afellay, but they could not force an equaliser despite a raft of chances.

Victory breaks a run of three games without a win for Southampton who saw substitute Sadio Mane harshly sent off for a collision with Er…

Neymar´s Barcelona exit was like mine, says former Brazil star Ronaldo

Former Brazil star Ronaldo believes Neymar s sensational world-record move to Paris Saint-Germain was similar to his own Barcelona exit.

Ronaldo enjoyed one extraordinary season at Camp Nou, scoring 34 LaLiga goals in 37 appearances before leaving for Inter ahead of the 1997-98 campaign.

His form at Barca helped him become FIFA World Player of the Year in 1996 and 1997, but he grew unhappy and contract negotiations broke down, with Inter then swooping in to pay his release clause.

Neymar s €222million switch shocked the football world in August, with Barca adamant PSG were flouting Financial Fair Play regulations.

Reports at the time suggested Neymar had grown frustrated with the club s hierarchy, and Ronaldo revealed that he had the same issue.
